10 ½" PEDDLER DOLL
Unmarked. Composition head with exaggerated molded features, painted brown eyes, large nose, high cheek bones, small pointy chin, and large smile, original tiny mohair curls on sides of head, wooden body with mortise and tenon peg joints at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, small feet with painted black shoes. Completely original, with black silk dress, white cotton apron, red wool cape with hood lying against back, white ruffled under-bonnet just visible inside black silk bonnet, coarse linen short slip and white cotton longer slip. Doll carries original straw basket with blue fabric lining, filled with original trinkets and wares, including a book dated 1835. Finish of face has fine crazing, most of hair missing from top of head, clothing has display dust and age discoloration, with a few holes in wool cape, but is generally in sturdy condition; woven straw basket has some damage and places where straw is missing. Inspection of doll and accessories is incomplete due to the fragile nature of this very rare and early piece. A real find for the collector of early, original dolls, reportedly from Lady Rothermere’s collection in Edinburgh, Scotland. $2150

9" LENCI MASCOTTE DUTCH GIRL
Marks: Lenci // Torino // Made in Italy on one side of silver paper tag, Miniature // 24 on other side of paper tag, Lenci // Made in Italy on cloth tag, both attached to bottom of skirt. Pressed felt swivel head, molded features with painted blue eyes looking right, painted upper lashes, open/closed mouth with two tone lips, original mohair wig in original set, cloth torso and legs, felt arms with mitten hands, jointed at shoulders and hips. Dressed in all original brown felt dress with white upper sleeves trimmed with pink and blue stripes, purple apron with purple/blue striped panel at top, pink felt cap trimmed with felt flowers, lace under-cap, felt flower and button trim on bodice of dress, wooden shoes, holding felt pink and purple flower. Near mint with two barely discernable flea bites on back of skirt . This is a darling little example of a colorful and near mint Miniature by Lenci, with tags intact. $375
